The Museum of Fine Arts in Tours offers to highlight an unknown part of the career of François Boucher (1703-1770), Major painter of the 18th century in the service of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour: his passion for theater and opera.
Active at the Paris Opera, at the Opéra-Comique and at the theater of small cabinets in Versailles, François Boucher works throughout his life to almost a hundred shows. That he designs or oversees the sets and stage costumes, No other painter of his time was so invested in the theatrical world.
Starting point of the exhibition and restored on this occasion, The four paintings of the Museum of Tours, masterpieces of rock art, testify to the artist's craze for scene arts. Alongside the sketch ofApollo crowning the arts, reputed to be a stage curtain project for the opera, The three paintings of Apollo and Issé and Sylvie and Amint honor the baroque operas ofIssé and ofSilvie.Apollo revealing his deity in the shepherdess Issé is indeed painted by Boucher in 1750 for the Marquise de Pompadour, In memory of his theatrical performances in Versailles in the role of Issé.
