Theater: the village of the deaf

The village of the deaf

By Léonore Confino

A luminous tale on the impoverishment of language.

Youma, fourteen years old, deaf, lives in Okionuk, Village lost in the north of the globe where the inhabitants have a treasure: their language. She observes the shifts of her polar paradise, When a merchant arrives to sell unnecessary and essential objects. Have the villagers have no money? He offers to pay in words. A hundred words for a toaster. The language disappears, gradually. We eliminate non -essential terms, Then the others. The vocabulary shortage stirs violence and rivalries. Youma and her interpreter Gurven came to alert us: they are the only ones to have kept a language of resistance ... that of the signs.
