Egypt, eternal passion

Exhibitions Arts Cultures-Egypte, éternelle passion

For 2,000 years, Egypt fascinates! But why ? The new exhibition of the estate and Royal Museum of Mariemont explores the fascination exercised by ancient Egypt on the Western imagination. The visitor will therefore not find Egyptian antiques there, But works of various eras that reflect the fantasies generated by the land of the pharaohs.

Renowned for its remarkable Egyptian collection (the largest in Wallonia and the second largest in Belgium!), The Royal Museum of Mariemont invites its audiences to discover another Egypt with its new Egypt exhibition. Eternal passion. This revisited Egypt extends over 2000 years, From Roman Antiquity to today, And presents works through which artists or craftsmen were inspired by ancient Egypt and its main cultural referents.

With its interest in the reception of antiquity in contemporary society, The Royal Museum of Mariemont made a blatant observation: ancient Egypt has always been at the heart of our imagination! She has continued to inspire us, to intrigue us, to fascinate us, to challenge our own identity. We find it everywhere: works from museums to children's toys, From public fountains to interior decorations, Antiquity collections to comics, Travel stories to souvenir photos, Artistic creations at people magazines, Cinema accessories for video games! Why such a success ? And how does it manifest itself in the West? What do we remember from the land of the pharaohs?

The course of the exhibition presents itself as a real mirror of our society. Ancient Egypt Parsème our daily lives. We are surrounded by "Egyptian makers" who convey ideas and images that find their roots in the Nile Valley. A dog -headed god, hieroglyphs, A pyramid or a mummy make "Egyptian" in our minds and are at the origin of the sometimes surprising productions offered in the exhibition.

From the Gallo-Roman Isis to Rihanna in Nefertiti, Passing through Jean-François Champollion and Raoul Warocqué, The exhibition voluntarily mixes the references and the media that build this other Egypt. Via a living room, a game room, a library and a garden, The scenography shows that the land of the pharaohs lives our daily lives! The Egypt exhibition. Eternal passion thus invites the visitor to an introspection: "What do you have from Egyptian to you? »»

On the sidelines of the exhibition, The Royal Museum of Mariemont focuses on the Egyptian coffins, These particularly emblematic monuments of Egypt. Egypt. Eternal passion: the multiple lives of coffins (12.11.2022> 09.04.2023) gives the floor to women and men who have marked the ancient and modern history of such objects. Egyptian coffins thus lend themselves to multiple lives during which artisans intervene (Log, sculptor), users (priest, deceased), But also contemporary restaurateurs and researchers.
