The clear world of blessed.s.e.x.s

Exhibitions Arts Cultures-Le monde clair des bienheureux.s.e.x.s
This exhibition results from the collective appropriation of a monumental panorama painted in the early 20th century in Minusio. The project is then guided by an astonishing constraint: the 32 guest painters are unaware almost everything from the initial work. Hors-time work, painted between 1923 and 1929, "Klarwelt der Seligen" is the centerpiece of Elisàr von Kupffer (Aka Elisarion: 1872-1942). This 26 -meter -long panoramic fresco celebrates the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations by exposing more than 80 male figures in 33 specific scenes, intertwining within a global representation of paradise. Saved from destruction by the Swiss curator Harald Szeemann around 1976, the work has since 2021 restored and exhibited at Monte Verità (TI). Today it constitutes a major work of the Ticino and Swiss heritage.

The exhibition of headquarters - entitled "The clear world of the Blessed.x.S." - emerges from the collective reappropriation of this remarkable work by recognized painters in the world of European figurative painting. The demand for his homosexuality, his precursor anchoring in current socio-political concerns and his reflections on gender testify to the role-modest but essential-played by Elisarion in the history of the combat led by the LGBTQI+ community for several years. It is also, on purpose, considered by certain.e.x.s as one of the pioneers of the queer movement. The exhibition is therefore also built to pay tribute to this painter by supporting his struggle and to crystallize the openings on the possibilities.

The specificity of this reappropriation is mainly based on the methodology adopted in the general creative process. Indeed, each artist has been awarded one of the 33 scenes constituting the work, in a 1: 1 scale format. Without knowing the reference artist or receiving reproduction from the original work, the guest painters work on the basis of a detailed written presentation of their scene. Each element of the decor, each position of the bodies are described with attention; Only the gender and sexual orientation of the figures represented remains indeterminate, thanks to the use of inclusive writing. In addition, parity between men and women artists is completely respected, which makes it possible to expand the constellation of points of view. Starting from this observation, and unlike the original work, it is very likely that "the clear world of the blessed.
