Permanent exhibition: Hambye canvases, an unknown popular art from the 19th century

The canvases of Hambye A local production from the 19th century to halfway between art and crafts.

In the first half of the 19th century, the manufacture of painted linen canvases developed in Hambye and Gavray. These canvases are made to decorate the walls of the bed beds and bring a touch of color and cheerfulness to the Manchois interiors. This original production was a certain success from 1820 to 1850.

Saved from oblivion by some enthusiasts, it constitutes today a departmental collection of popular art recognized composed of double paintings of Hambye and presented as real works of plastic art. The exhibition makes it possible to understand the role of these canvases as protection and decor of the beds-alcoves.

Many objects and a rich iconography demonstrate the influence of Norman popular art in their graphic composition.
