The Périchole | Offenbach

Offenbach staged by Pelly: this is the guarantee of a madly cheerful evening, in the pure spirit of Vaudeville. A master of the genre, the director knows, however, what the splendor of this fantasy allege is expressed: the arbitrariness of power and the ravages of corruption. Quiet ! Tonight, it's the festival of viceroy!

Curious fate as that of the short news of Merimée entitled Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement: his few pages will have inspired a great film to Jean Renoir, and to Jacques Offenbach one of his most catchy scores. The scene is in Lima, in the last years of the Spanish colonial regime. The Périchole is very pretty, she sings well, but she has a hollow belly, and her lover Piquillo is a little too shady to let her do the quest, as should be, with the male audience. Thus begins one of the most spiritual booklets that Meilhac and Halévy signed for their accomplice Offenbach. Applauded from its creation in 1868, this Périchole was even more than six years later after a few touch -ups and the addition of a third act, worth to Hortense Schneider some of its most beautiful triumphs. There is no doubt that Laurent Pelly, with the inventiveness and the sense of the rhythm we know, will be able to draw from these riches the best party to carry a perichole which promises to be unforgettable.
